At the West District Relays at Irvine in October I was at the furthest point from the start with a clear view of the oncoming runners. In the Girls Race, there was this big girl from Inverclyde working her way across the fields but not far back was Chloe. There was nobody there to see her but she worked as hard as she could, caught the girl and passed me on the way to the start of the next lap. When they were next seen the big girl was in front again but not for long, not only did Chloe get her again but her finishing sprint to hand over to Diane Nicolson was magnificent.
Chloe started in the club almost two years ago and trained for most of the time with Donald MacLeod but about nine months ago started training with Phil Dolan's group which includes boys and girls, juniors and seniors all working to help each other improve. Although she runs all distances but prefers 800 and 1500 metres on the track, she really likes cross country. This year she ran in all three relays - County, District and National - and should be out in all three Championships. In the County Championships this weekend she will be hoping for another medal or two and to at least replicate the third place gained in the Relays at Postie's Park.
On the track, she has a pb for the 800 of 2:57 and won two medals at the Local Athletics Partnership Championships in September - bronze for the 800 and silver for the 200 metres. She is also the reigning Under 13 Girls club track and field events champion. Big brother Jamie beat her by a meagre one second in the Fresh'n'Lo Great Scottish Run where she was timed at an excellent 14:37 for the 3K distance - this result did not please her and if she doesn't beat him next year it won't be for want of trying!
Slightly build with a mass of blonde curls, Chloe is a fearsome competitor and as she becomes more experienced and stronger will be an even more redoubtable opponent.
