The club has many enthusiastic and talented young athletes and this is only the first in the series of promised profiles. Rachel joined the club in September 2006 aged nine and has achieved quite a lot in the two years since then. Needless to say she is a regular for the school and has been a key part of several medal winning teams. Coached by Phil Dolan she trains with others of all age groups including Chloe Wright, Kirsty Kelly, Mirren Wright, Tony Dolan, Peter Bowman and big brother Mark. Her personal best performances are as follows:
100 metres: 15.9 seconds
600 metres: 2:01 (which is not only the club U11 record but is also faster than any Under 13 has attained so far).
800 metres: 2:51.1
1500 metres: 5:54.19 (also the club U13 record)
3000 metres on the road: 13:35 when she was the third 10 year old in the Great Scottish Run)
Long Jump: 3.09 metres
She only trains twice a week with Coach Phil keeping an eye on just how much she is doing! Mind you she is also into football, hockey and gymnastics and sings in the school choir. I seem to have forgotten cross country: current club champion in her age group, fastest time and first across the line in the County Relays two years in succession and a creditable 22nd in the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championship at Kirkcakdy in 2007! In her spare time she likes playing on the computer or running around with her friends.
A lovely girl who is a credit to her parents and to the club, any club would be fortunate to have Rachel as a member. She has her athletics heroines and top of the tree for Rachel as for so many others is Paula Radcliffe. Look out for her in the County Championships at Kirkintilloch where, unlike many others she will make light work of the mud that there always is at Kirkie!!!
