I note from the 'Herald' that the Scotstoun Indoor facility has been opened to the public today. It is either a facility that could be useful to the club or one that is so crowded by the rugby fraternity that it will be almost impossible to use for big chunks of the week. Sean Lineen was quoted as saying that it can be a great recruiting tool for the rugby club - bringing possible new signings up to see where they do their indoor training and the possibilities that it offers (eg running and passing on the indoor 60 metres track), retaining current club players who might otherwise leave and for routine training purposes with their professional players. It's hard to see where the athletes fit in. It may be of course that so many folk go there that the Kelvin Hall is much emptier and easier to use.
The real shame though is the lack of any facility at all in Clydebank at present - goodness only knows when the track at St Peter's school on the Boulevard. What is the current position with regard to the track anyway? It was to be late 2009, then August to November 2010, then it was to be 2011................. With politicians going on about how good it will be to have the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the motivating effect it will have on the populace the words of the late Eric Brown come to mind. When asked how well his wife played golf he said "She talks a great game but she plays like a tree trunk." See politicians? See sport?
