If it's June it's time for the schools' championship: school, County, Scottish and Inter Area! The County Schools have just finished having been held over two Tuesday nights at Scotstoun and several of the club's youngsters took part and came away with medals. Duncan MacNeill used to send us a copy of the results but he has retired and they are not to hand yet for this year. Roisin McShea did take part and won the 1500m in the colours of St Peter the Apostle High School. Any other results - please send them on to me.
The Scottish Schools Championships are held on Friday and Saturday this week at Grangemouth. They used to be well supported by local schools but the representation has been falling away over the years - and this year? According to the start lists at the SSAA website, St Peter's has only three athletes competing and Clydebank High School has none. The Bearsden schools - Bearsden High School, Boclair Academy and Douglas - which used to send at least one bus, are each sending fewer than ten pupils. We also had athletes from Balfron High School - again another three youngsters. It is not as though the talent is not there - it clearly is when you see results at Open Graded Meetings where all the U17, U15 and U13 athletes are at school. Schools do not seem to be entering them in any numbers these days. Maybe were the club to appoint a liaison officer to make and keep contact with at least CHS and St Peter's it would make a difference. Maybe worth discussing at the next Committee Meeting? A club/schools liaison officer?
We have at least Peter Bowman taking part for Bearsden Academy this weekend, and then on Sunday he is doing the 1500 in club colours at the Scottish Under 20 Championships where Johnathan Farrell is also competing but in the 100 and 200 metres.
Wherever they are competing, all the very best to all our young athletes.
