The young athletes finished their indoor season on Sunday in Kelvin Hall and given the difficulties of the winter weather they did well to get there. Special congratulations to the Under 15 and Under 20 Men on making the Final. Not easy with the Giffnock Norths, Edinburgh AC's, Pitreavie's and Shettleston's not to mention the Victoria Park's, so well done chaps.
The individual athletes in the other age groups all performed nobly and with some help could also have been finalists: the club record is five teams in the finals. So let's spend the summer recruiting: see if we had use of the track at St Peter's and contact with the school staff? We could have one of the best teams in Scotland. The steps are simple:
1. Book the track. Cost is immaterial: a levy on runners would help mitigate the cost but it is a legitimate overhead for an athletic club to hire a track. Amateur football teams don't have the option of playing up the swing park, it has to be on a pitch and they have to pay the going rate. So do we.
2. Get it from the end of March and get organised.
3. Contact the schools: the club president is retired and has the time, if he had the inclination, to contact the two secondary schools in the area and visit on behalf of the club.
4. Tell the world what we have to offer: we have Phil and Peter with endurance events, Donald for sprints, Donna and Mary Anne to do the jumps. Send out posters!
5. The runners should be speaking to pals, brothers, sisters and cousins about coming along.
Hey presto, we have a big club again. As that nice Mr Nike says, Just Do It!!!
