I see more and more runners jogging along with things stuck in their ears. I am told they are listening to music and I know that some races bar the use of ipods or similar devices. AW last year had a letter from a race organiser who had had an announcement asking them to be switched off for the duration of the race so that they would hear any instructions being passed on. One of the runners came up to him, removed the earpiece and asked what that was that he had just said! While I really seriously disapprove of these things being worn (you can't hear traffic for a start and with more and more of it on the roads, it could be deadly) there is a case for running to rhythm. It used to be, and I am told it still is the case, that runners sing inwardly while they run along. I always found 'Pineapple Princess' by Annette Funicello or 'Walking Back To Happiness' by Helen Shapiro worked for me. One year I started the Balloch to Clydebank to 'Seventy Six Trombones' and finished to Elvis's 'Wooden Heart'!
Peter Wilkinson of Derby and County who was a real top marathon runner used to race his marathons to the tune of 'California Here I Come' and one year, with a ragnail on his left thumb, his concentration and rhythmical swinging of his arms led to him wearing a hole in his vest and drawing blood from his side. Jim Peters used to sing to himself as well but his chosen songs are not recorded anywhere. Dunno if you could run to Oasis or Blur or even Beth Ditto or Lady Gaga, maybe someone would enlighten me.
