I saw a quote in the paper this morning which said that a pullover is what you wear when your Mum feels cold. There's maybe a bit of truth in that but Johnathan Farrell and I were at the EACA Conference in the Marriott Hotel at the weekend and Frank Dick, emphasising the importance of preparation for a race quoted Abraham Lincoln who said "When I am given eight hours to chop down a tree, I take six to sharpen the axe." You'll maybe need to think about that one a bit but how about the following. Ian Stewart who was World Cross Country Champion and European 5000 metres champion said at a SAAA Training day in the 1970's "You all (the Scottish inernationalists present) would go 200 miles to get out of a good race, I'll go 200 miles to get into one." For about ten years when I was in Lenzie, I trained with Doug Gunstone who came from Dundee and he was adamant that we were spoiled in that there were so many races within easy distance of Glasgow and we didn't have to travel so we didn't bother to travel. What's YOUR outlook? Would you go to say Edinburgh for a hard race or take the easy option and do another 10K within 20 miles of Clydebank??? On the same theme I used another old quote on many an occasion: "You can't say you want to be a ski-er and never leave Maryhill; you have to go where the snow is." Everybody needs a challenge to succeed, so seek out the challenges. A Final Word of wisdom from Davie Bowman: "When you run into the wind, welcome it! You breathe in twice as much oxygen as usual and you are supercharged!" No, I didn't believe it either but it's a nice line!
Finally, finally, I'm changing my emnail address from this Friday (7th November) and it will be ardbruach@btinternet.com and won't be using the old one at all thereafter. I'll put up another blog on Friday or Saturday.
