Just when you thought it was safe to read the blog, there is another post. In response to the five people who sent me emails and the six who posted a response, I'm going to do blogging only on one day each week. It will probably be on a Wednesday to avoid any posting that Michelle and Yvonne do about races at the weekend. I am specially pleased at the posting from Roisin and Rachel - thanks girls for the encouragement! I'd also like to wish Michelle all the best and thank her for taking on the responsibility of doing the blog on behalf of the younger athletes. For this one I'll give a couple of quotes from a former Scottish runner who went on to win bronze for New Zealand in Mexico. "Champions abound in positive thinking. They follow their dreams and make them come true. They train more. They train smarter and harder. They train when it is hot, cold, wet or dry. They set the goals and go for them."
"It is about 80% mental and 20% physical to do great things in running."
"Sometimes it is a matter of mind over mattress." (I used to coach a 17 year old 800 metre runner whose mother described him to me as 'Half man, Half mattress'.
and finally
"Remember when the going gets tough, most give up." (which reminds me of a quote from Lillian Board, a lovely woman and wonderful athlete who died of cancer but not before becoming one of the best in the world at 400 and 800, who said "When it starts to hurt, I welcome it because that is what I have trained for. I have trained so that I can stand this better than the rest." Or something like that - I haven't the words before me right now.
So - good luck Michelle, thanks girls and I'll see you on Wednesday and - who was the former Scottish runner from Stirling who won bronze in the Mexico Olympic marathon?
