As we are fast approaching the end of the winter season with only the road race at Rouken Glen park and the Dunbartonshire schools cross country left to participate in, the juniors will be looking forward to taking part in some track and field events over the coming months. It has been nice to see the junior section expanding over the winter months, so I thought it would be informative to let the newbie juniors, as well as the juniors who have been with the club for a while know about the different events available during the summer season. Details below:
Scottish Young Athletes league:
Sun 02 May - Wishaw
Sun 30 May - Grangemouth
Sun 04 July- Wishaw
This league is for U13 athletes and upwards, where we compete in a variety of different track and field events, sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws.
Central and South of Scotland League:
25/04 - Grangemouth
23/05 - Dumfries
27/06 - Linwood
This league is for U11 athletes and upwards, it is the first year we will have competed in this league and again we compete in a variety of different track and field events, sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws.
Open graded meetings
A variety of different events, both track and field, takes place at these meetings. If the athlete wishes to take part they need to register for their event of interest at least 30 mins beforehand. Events are seeded according to ability, therefore athletes could be running against athletes of different age groups. Open graded meetings are run regularly throughout the summer season, at different venues including, Linwood, Ayr, Grangemouth and Crown point track. For further information please refer to the Scottish athletics website.
Scottish Championships
There are two track and field Scottish championships during the summer season. The first is the Scottish athletics closed championships, usually fairly early on in the season. The second is the Bank of Scotland championships, which usually takes place towards the end of the season. Both these events are for U15 athletes and upwards. There are closing dates for both events, details can be found on the Scottish athletics website.
There is also the Scottish schools track and field championships on 11th and 12th June at Grangemouth. Athletes, (U14s) and upwards must be entered by their secondary school and the school must be affiliated.
Other races of interest
There is the Great Scottish run for 9-17 year olds, where juniors can participate in either a 1.5 or 3k race at Glasgow Green, on 04 September 2010. Please note that this is pre-entry only.
There will also be the Clydesdale Harriers club track and field championships, a great opportunity for all the juniors to get together. Date still to be confirmed.
And off course one of the highlights of the season, the LAP Championships, where we participate in a variety of events, alongside West Dunbarton ac and Helensburgh ac, usually in September, at the end of the season and always a great day out for the kids.
Hopefully, the weather will be a bit warmer during the summer months!
