When is a Runner a Jogger?

There's an interesting wee correspondence on the coolrunning.com site about what makes a runner a runner and what makes a jogger a jogger. The responses are many and varied: (1) The number of times you run in a week; (2) The distances you cover; (3) "An entry blank" - ie if you take part in races you're a runner. When someone mentioned the speed you run at, one response said "I call myself a runner. I may average 13 or 14 minute miles, I enter races I know I won't win but I do them anyway." the entering races you know you won't win is par for the course for most runners, but 14 minute miles? That's 7 minutes for half a mile, three and a half minutes for 440 yards and 1:45 for 220 yards and 52 seconds for 100 yards. Hardly running in my book. The definition that we used to go with was that faster than eight minute miles was running, slower than eight minutes a mile was jogging.

I would also go with attitude as part of a definition: (1) do you race when you run in a race - ie is there anybody you want to beat or is there a time that you are aiming for? (2) Do you train to get fitter and faster or just to maintain fitness? If the latter, I'd say you're a jogger. (3) do you run frequently in races or just in the one charity event every year? If the latter you are most definitely a jogger!
OK - them's some of my thoughts and I'm hoping that they'll get a few comments. Not to me, but to the blog and I'd hope they're not too personal! My final comment is that the above does not refer in any way to Ultra Distance runners - they're a whole different breed.
