The championships were held on Sunday at Linwood on a good day for athletics. There were lots of club members - Senior down to Under 11 athletes of both genders - taking part and I believe that all came away with at least one medal. It would be impossible to get all the detailed results down here but they will appear on the results pages in due course.
Maybe the most spectacular performance was that of Anthony Jones in the Senior Men's Javelin where his best of 40.47 metres won by almost 20 metres. It turns out that in the mid 90's he threw the javelin for Wales in the Celtic Cup Competition! Other than Anthony the best throws marks came from Under 15 athlete Lewis Wood who won shot, discus and javelin with 7.01, 16.41 and 16.32 which were all personal bests. He also picked up a medal for the 200 metres and I also saw him in the 100 metres - I think. The other boy to do well in the field events was Mark Busby with wins in the shot (7.55m - a pb) and Javelin (17.5) and second in the high jump in 1.45 metres. On the Under 15 girls side Beth Atkinson took part in shot, discus, javelin and 100 metres and came away with a nice set of medals. Down an age group in the Under 13 Girls events, Rachel Busby took two firsts and a second: 1st in the 600 metres in 2:01 (a pb by 6 seconds!) and 75 metres (12.0 seconds), second in the long jump with 3.09 metres. She was also sixth in the shot putt with 3.70 metres.
Johnathan Farrell in the Under 20 age group took part in 100 metres (1st in 11.8), 200 metres (1st in 23.8), high jump (1st with 1.55m), shot (3rd with 7.52) and 800 metres (4th in 2:25). He also took part in the discus where his position was not clear when we left but the result he was a bit disappointed with was the long jump where he could only manage 4.99 metres - behind his old friend and rival David Brown who cleared 5.01 metres! David also had a very busy afternoon doing well in high jump and 800 metres as well as in the long jump.
There was a big number of seniors out in the races with the grand sight of five in the Senior/Junior Men's race where Peter Bowman led all the way to finish ahead of Ian Robertson with David Brown third and Johnathan Farrell fourth - and, no, they were not the only runners in the race! Tony Dolan won the Junior 1500 metres by 200 metres in a new pb of 5:06.8 and in the Men's race Anthony Jones was third. Up to the 3000 metres and Ian Robertson won in 9:56 from Paul Carrol in 10:24. Marina MCallum was second in the Ladies race and although she wasn't there, Pamela McCrossan was announced as being a medal winner in the same event.
I haven't all the results to hand and even if I did it would be impossible to cover them all - Chloe Wright ran very well in all her races with a super finish in the 800 to get her third place, the new girls from Boclair the Nicolson twins - both had good days, Ryan Nelson worked every inch of the way in all his races, Mirren Wright also went home with her quota of medals, the Blairdardie trio of Scott, Keir and Connor all took part in at least four events - there were just so many of them. It was a great day out for everybody and a very successful day for the Club.
