TV and Recruitment

Five days late I watched the BBC discussion on the state of sport in Scotland and where it was going. There was general agreement that all sports - with maybe the exception of cycling - were in a bad way. They had Liz McColgan, Graeme Obree, Gordon McKie (from the RFU) and Tom English (an Irishman who writes for the 'Scotsman') and an audience that was encouraged to contribute. After the first 20 minutes (of 58) were about rugby it became more general. One of the most interesting comments to me was Graeme Obree's in response to a question about what the legacy of 2012 and 2014 would be. His reply was that the legacy is NOW. "It's like Christmas, you spend months looking for ward to it, planning for it, talking about it and preparing for it. And the day or week after Christmas Day, it's all forgotten. If we want anything from the Games we do all the work now." And that's it in a nutshell. I couldn't get the programme on the iPlayer but if I googled Sportnation I could get it that way - it's well worth watching.
We now have a track, which must be a great recruiting tool if we do the work. Posters to schools, handbills available at meetings, contact all the unattached runners at the 10K, give the coaches business cards (not expensive if you know the right guy!), make contact with other sports clubs (eg the rugby clubs that helped so much during the 80's and 90's) and so on.
If you have a wee look at the West Dunbartonshire AAC's website you might find that we will soon be having a recruitment area in Dumbarton as well.
