National Age Group Championships at Aberdeen

This weekend saw the National Age Group Championships at Aberdeen Sports Village.  Despite the travelling distance and cost involved for the weekend away, four of our junior athletes made the trip north to compete.
They were under 16 girls, Emily Paxton and Rachel Campbell and under 18 boys Andrew Hunter and David Campbell.
Saturday saw Andrew compete in the 200m and Long jump, while David competed in the 400m hurdles.
With tough weather conditions and bursts of gusting winds PB’s were not on the cards as the boys competed.  Despite this Andrew jumped 5m 67cms and narrowly missed a place in the final 6.  In the 200m Andrew ran against winds of -2.8 to finish 4th in his heat and was unfortunate not to secure a place in the final.
David ran well in the 400m hurdles and finished second to claim the silver medal.
Sunday saw the girls compete.  Rachel ran a PB in the 300m Hurdles to finish second in her heat in a time of 51.26s. She came home in 5th place in the final and was delighted to have run another PB with a time of 51.17.
In the 300m Emily ran a PB to finish 3rd in her heat in a time of 44.73s and was very pleased to further reduce her time in the final and finish 5th in a time of 44.26s.
Well done to each of the young athletes for their effort and determination.  You were excellent ambassadors for your club.

Podium Success for Clydesdale Teams

After the highly competitive indoor winter league meetings, Clydesdale Harriers saw two teams qualify for The Scottish Athletics Indoor League Finals on the 24th of February at the Emirates Stadium.  They were the under 20 Women and under 17 men’s team.
Before the two teams battled it out against the toughest of opposition in a thoroughly enjoyable day of athletics, it was the turn of the relay teams, and for the first time in many years Clydesdale was fielding multiple teams. There were some exceptional runs and some of the teams narrowly missed out on a place in the final while every team gained valuable experience.  New athletes were introduced to the atmosphere and excitement of competition, which will stand them in good stead, as the club prepares for the up coming summer outdoor leagues.
The relay teams were –
Under 13 Girls- Cara Jordan, Natasha Shaw, Chloe Allan and Sarah Goggins.
Under 15 Girls- Iona Allan (missing from the picture), Rachel Campbell, Rachel Meehan and Anna Haddock.

Under 17 girls- Erin Ball, Heather McEwan, Emily Paxton, and Abbie Warrington.
Under 11 boys- Zak Shannon, Stuart Aird, Andrew Donohue and Arran Boyle.

Under 13 boys were Aiden Fegie, Aaron Belkevitz, Ronan Ross and Nathan Kerr

Under 15 boys-David Daly, Brian Aird, Lewis McLeod and Lewis Hay.
A  wide range of events were contested in the S.A.I.L Final which followed the relays. On the track there was 60m sprint, 60nhurdles, 200m, 400m and 800m races.  The field events were long jump, high jump, triple jump and shot put.
The under 20 women’s team were Claire Reid, Victoria McHugh, Rachel Liddell and Kirsty Kelly.  The four girls knew they had their work cut out for them and worked hard against quality teams from Giffnock, Central, Whitemoss and Lasswade.  Despite tough competition they were determined to show what they were made of and they demonstrated their desire to succeed with determination and enthusiasm. The hard work paid off as the points accumulated and they laid claim to their silver medal podium place.
Well done girls-everyone is very proud of your well deserved achievement.
The under 17 Men’s team were Tobi Akinkunmi, Darren Dolan, David Campbell and Andrew Hunter.  Two of the boys, Andrew and David had been finalists together as under 15’s.  They were   eager to repeat their success in this more competitive age group and were undaunted by the strong opposition in the form of Central, Edinburgh, Giffnock and Victoria Park.  As the day rolled the pressure intensified as each team fought hard for points  in every event.  The Clydesdale boys showed off their athletic skill and determination, scoring significant points and finishing in the top three, in six out of the nine events.
They achieved many individual successes over the course of the day and they were delighted with the  team’s success as they finished in second place to claim the silver medal. Everyone in the club is very proud of their success.  Well done boys!

Clydesdale Harriers Club Handicap

Clydesdale Harriers Athletic Club welcomes and encourages youngsters of all athletic ability, and coaches work to foster a nurturing, caring environment for the children as well as ensuring that they are provided with opportunities to maximise their potential.
Head coach Phil Dolan and his team are careful to ensure a proportionate mix of work, fun and individual athlete programmes are in place in order to ensure the success of the club as a whole and the athletes in particular.
The junior section has expanded significantly in the past eighteen months and it continues to grow thanks to the commitment of the support staff and the enthusiasm and hard work of the youngsters.
The gruelling task of winter training is in full swing and for many of the club’s athletes this will continue over the Festive Season, so it was with good humour and festive cheer that athletes of all ages joined in the fun of the annual Club Handicap. It was with pride that the coaches of Clydesdale presided over the event at Milton Mains, which saw more than 60 children take part. A club record per chance?
The race was divided into three categories.  First to run were the young ‘novices’ all of whom were born after August 2001 on a course which was approximately one mile long.  Teigan Breen was the fastest girl and finished in a time of 4:12.  She was followed by Jade Milne 4:17, Nicole Clark 4:21, Molly McQuillan 4:45, Libby Simpson 4:48 and Kimberly Allan 5:16.
The fastest boy was Cairn Wallace who completed the course in 4:09 and was followed by Luke Lindup 4:14, Jack Dolan 4:16, Stuart Aird 4:17, Aaron Belkevitz 4:20, Ryan McKell 4:25, Kieran Goggins 4:29, Josh McAndlish 4:27, Nathan Kerr 4:42, Reece Pritchard 4:45, Andrew Donaghue 5:24, Aaron Boyle 5:32 and Grant Sloan 5:35.
Having completed the course the youngsters gathered to cheer on and encourage the intermediate runners whose birth dates ranged from September 1999 to August 2001.   The length of the course was doubled for this group, and they were more than up to the challenge.  Fastest girl home was Iona Allan in 8:35 followed by Lucy McKenzie 8:46, Niamh Thomson 9:21, Natasha Shaw 9:23, Sarah Goggins 9:30, Chloe Allan 10.0, Zubi Koffi 10.04, Caitlin Stuart 10:17, Niamh Keenan 10: 33, Cara Jordan 10:58, Aimmee Abbott 10:59, Anna Haddock 11:01, Danielle Walsh 11:01, Rachel Meehan 11:22, Sophie Hassan, 12:21, Emily McKay 12:30, Hannah Lindup 13:08, Danielle Cardino 13:10 and Penny Donaghy 13:25.
The third group was a mix of experienced runners and new members who were born after 1999.  They consisted of long distance runners, middle distance runners, hurdlers, sprinters, throwers and high jumpers and they each ran it in the spirit in which it was intended.
Fastest girl was Emily Paxton 8:27, followed by Charlotte Ross 8:29, Erin Denny 8:43, Erin Ball 9:32, Yasmin Koffi 9:44, Karyn Glen 10:45 and Louise Milne 11:39.
Fastest boy was Lewis Priest 7:21, followed by David Campbell 7:25, Lewis Hay 7:55, Andrew Hunter 8.0, Pat McCloskey 8.0, Darrin Dolan 8:16, Brian Aird 8:17, Phil Allan 8:18, Luke Smith 9:39, Declan Boilen 9:51, Vishal Meehan 11.02 and Tobi Akinkumni 12:21.
Thank you to all the children for their eager participation and to the parents who came along to support the event.
If you would like to become involved in athletics visit the Harriers website at www.clydesdaleharriers.co.uk and visit the juniors section where you will find contact details for head coach (Junior Section) Phil Dolan.

Clydesdale Harriers Success on the Track

Clydesdale Harriers were in action again in the Scottish Athletics Indoor League in Kelvin Hall last week where they fielded thirteen teams, from under 11’s to under 20’s.  This was the second of three meetings in this competition where more than 30 clubs are battling it out for a place in the finals in February.   Clydesdale Harriers enjoyed considerable success both in terms of points and by the growing numbers of athletes who are turning out for competition.
Firs out were the under 11 boys.  Stuart Aird battled courageously despite the withdrawal of team mates due to injury and finished in joint 15th place with Ayr Seaforth and Beith.
The under 13 boys entered two teams and finished a credible 14th and 17th respectively.  They were Aiden Fergie, Ronan Ross, Aaron Smith Kieran Goggins, Thomas Hearns and Luke Lindup.
The under 15 boy’s demonstrated their athletic versatility when they stood in for team mates who could not attend on the day.  Brian Aird, Stephen Kane, Lewis Hay, Lewis McLeod, Vishal Meehan and Lewis Priest all gave convincing performances to take their teams to 10th and 13th in the overall standings.
Congratulations to Lewis Priest.  The Clydesdale lad has been chosen to represent the West District in the Inter Districts event in Edinburgh on January 5th.  Good luck, we all wish you well.
The under 17 men, who finished in second place after the first meeting and have their eye on the final were determined to keep to the task, despite the organisers decision to remove the 400m race from the competition.  The team had scored maximum points from this event and omitting it from match two would have consequences for the boys and tough decisions to be made by manager Phil Dolan.  Following some tactical changes, they did not let the pressure affect their goal of reaching the final, and the determination of Todi Akinkumni, David Campbell and Andrew Hunter was such, that by the end of the second meeting they lead the table in joint first position.  Way to Go Clydesdale!
Well done to Pat McCloskey in the under 20 men events who worked tirelessly to finish in the top ten.
The girl’s events saw a mixture of experienced young athletes compete with some who were new to the competition circuit.   Sarah Goggins, Chloe Allan, Natasha Shaw, Penny Donaghy, Jade Milne, Carly Wishart and Caitlin Stuart represented Clydesdale in the under 13 cat.  With the teams finishing well in 9th and 13th place they will go into the last match with the confidence to improve their standings overall.
The under 15 girls fielded two teams in a field of twenty nine teams.  Rachel Campbell, Rachel Meehan and Iona Allan fought each race with confidence to finish match two in eleventh position, while Aimee Abbott and Charlotte Ross, reduced to a team of two battled with determination to finish in a credible joint 17th position. Well done girls.
The under 17 girls worked confidently and tirelessly.  Karyn Glen, Emily Paxton and Louise Steele Milne covered all events and completed the days work in joint fifth position.  This is a tremendous achievement and well deserved.
There was no doubt about the winner in the under 20 women’s events with Clare Reed carrying the flag for this category and finishing the out right winner in first place.  Go Claire!
Match three in January will be held in the new Emirates Stadium and the line up for the finals will be decided then. Good luck to all the athletes who are taking part.

Dumfries on Sunday

The club - all age groups - was competing at Dumfries on Sunday in the Central and South of Scotland League second match. The David Keswick Centre is as nice a stadium as you will get and the weather was glorious. Everybody I spoke to were enjoying themselves although the meeting overran slightly but nobody seemed too upset by it.
I was delighted to see the return to action of Donald MacLeod, Connor Ewing and Rachel Busby. Rachel has had lots of problems with her heel recently but she came down to Dumfries and took part in the field events showing excellent club spirit and the team was the better for it. Connor missed couple of matches through injury so it was great to see him back running a good 1500 metres and setting a personal best. Donald was resplendent in a scarlet polo shirt with the club logo on it - it could well serve as the garment of choice for track and field team members who need to be easy to find at these matches but he did his bit as an official at the high jump and it seemed as though he had never been away. Welcome back to you both!
There were a couple of absences on the competition side but they were more than compensated for by the appearance of Ryan Nelson and Marina McCallum. Ryan had a couple of good runs and Marina enjoyed the competition and the atmosphere and both added valuable points as well as contributing to the camaraderie of the afternoon.
The Senior Men were well represented by four of the club's finest - Johnathan Farrell, Ian Robertson, Peter Bowman and Ryan Nelson - and turned out the club's only relay team of the day. It's a pity that so many age groups were one runner short of a relay team when the points were there to be picked up since many relays only had two or three clubs contesting them.
I can't name all the competitors but I will mention Kirsty who had a good afternoon and who only needs a bit more confidence to be even more of a threat to runners from other clubs. I'll maybe add a bit more when I see the results officially but to all the parents and all the athletes - David, Andrew, Roisin, Claire and the others - thanks for giving me a good day out!

Summer season

As we are fast approaching the end of the winter season with only the road race at Rouken Glen park and the Dunbartonshire schools cross country left to participate in, the juniors will be looking forward to taking part in some track and field events over the coming months. It has been nice to see the junior section expanding over the winter months, so I thought it would be informative to let the newbie juniors, as well as the juniors who have been with the club for a while know about the different events available during the summer season. Details below:

Scottish Young Athletes league:

Sun 02 May - Wishaw
Sun 30 May - Grangemouth
Sun 04 July- Wishaw

This league is for U13 athletes and upwards, where we compete in a variety of different track and field events, sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws.

Central and South of Scotland League:

25/04 - Grangemouth
23/05 - Dumfries
27/06 - Linwood

This league is for U11 athletes and upwards, it is the first year we will have competed in this league and again we compete in a variety of different track and field events, sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws.

Open graded meetings

A variety of different events, both track and field, takes place at these meetings. If the athlete wishes to take part they need to register for their event of interest at least 30 mins beforehand. Events are seeded according to ability, therefore athletes could be running against athletes of different age groups. Open graded meetings are run regularly throughout the summer season, at different venues including, Linwood, Ayr, Grangemouth and Crown point track. For further information please refer to the Scottish athletics website.

Scottish Championships

There are two track and field Scottish championships during the summer season. The first is the Scottish athletics closed championships, usually fairly early on in the season. The second is the Bank of Scotland championships, which usually takes place towards the end of the season. Both these events are for U15 athletes and upwards. There are closing dates for both events, details can be found on the Scottish athletics website.

There is also the Scottish schools track and field championships on 11th and 12th June at Grangemouth. Athletes, (U14s) and upwards must be entered by their secondary school and the school must be affiliated.

Other races of interest

There is the Great Scottish run for 9-17 year olds, where juniors can participate in either a 1.5 or 3k race at Glasgow Green, on 04 September 2010. Please note that this is pre-entry only.

There will also be the Clydesdale Harriers club track and field championships, a great opportunity for all the juniors to get together. Date still to be confirmed.

And off course one of the highlights of the season, the LAP Championships, where we participate in a variety of events, alongside West Dunbarton ac and Helensburgh ac, usually in September, at the end of the season and always a great day out for the kids.

Hopefully, the weather will be a bit warmer during the summer months!
