Big Miles

There was a letter in the AW several weeks ago about the magazine publishing a schedule for the runner aiming to beat 40 minutes for the 10K on the road. There were in fact several saying on the theme that any senior man (not woman, not vet) who could not run inside 40 minutes for the distance was not doing enough running. Simple as that! This week the editor made a confession - he had doctored a schedule aiming at sub 30 minutes so as to make it suitable for sub 40!!! There has in fact been a kind of theme this week of big miles - Ian Stewart has one in which he compares us to the Americans. the Kenyans and the Moroccans who all said that they learned it from Britain 30 years ago. There are some good letters on the same subject one even suggesting that we get rid of heart rate monitors GPS and Garmins and just do the high volume work that is required. If you are a senior endurance runner or coach, have a look at Athletics Weekly this week. Or get it on the internet later!
