Kerrydale Street

Since I have given some info on the Rangers book which has a fair bit of coverage of the club's connection with Clydesdale Harriers, I'll try to balance it with a reference to the Kerrydale Street website which is basically a Celtic supporters website. It has a report (complete with teams) of the match in which Clydesdale Harriers defeated Celtic at Parkhead in 1889. The link is www.kerrydalestreet.com/page/1889 and then just scroll down to the match in question.

In my time in the club there have been many books recommended by Harriers to Harriers - not all were on athletics matters: I remember Frank Kielty suggesting Patrick McGill's books (The Rat Pit, Moleskin Joe and so on)nearly thirty years ago and most recently Allan Faulds loaned me 'The Shetland Bus' about the last war. There were athletics books in all categories: books on training, books on coaching and biographies in the main. Occasionally there was a book on sports philosophy (eg 'Testament of a Runner') and just this week I saw 'What Sport Tells Us About Life. by Ed Smith who is a cricket player. It has chapters on such diverse topics as "The Age of the Amateur has passed: Worse Luck", "The Curse of Talent" and "What Price Is Too High?" I can see it being passed round among the guys of twenty and thiry years ago and being argued about - many of the topics are perennials and worth looking at in detail. So if you want a wee read that is not too heavy and that might just make you think a bit - get it from the Library!

Finally, it is good to see Ryan Kenny back just this week. He is the right type of boy to have in the club and he can run a bit as well! Welcome back Ryan!

More Strathallan and a Book

I omitted from the comments on the Strathallan Meeting last week the fact that Anton Russell took part in the Long and Triple Jump competitions: his placings are still not known but it is good to see him in only his second competition of the year. Lewis Wood, the star Under 15 throws expert, took part in the wrestling championships and took third place: it would be a brave boy who took him on, I can tell you!
The 'Rangers 1972:the gallant pioneers' is now available and 'flying off the shelves'. The club has almost four pages in the final chapter as well as several mentions in the course of the book.
I have another book and will cover it separately tomorrow in my next blog.

Last Weekend - Next Weekend

The popular Strathallan Gathering was held on Sunday in Bridge of Allan and we had two athletes in action. Tony Dolan took part in the 400 metres and 800 metres races where he was sixth. For future reference - there are handicap races for Juniors (ie U16) at 90 metres, 200, 400 and 800 plus long jump and triple jump. Money prizes for them all plus the Bastable Trophy for the best Youth at the meeting: the club has won it three times with Douglas McDonald in the 70's and David McAusland and Mark Govan in the 90's. In the Senior events, Johnathan Farrell was on the track no less than five times for two races. Heat, Cross Ties and Final of the 90 metres saw him finish second in 10 seconds. Running from a 6 metre mark he was beaten by the man off 7 metres on the slightly uphill straight. In the 200 metres he was fourth in the final after qualifying easily from his Heat.
This coming weekend is the big one for young athletes. National Championships for the Under 20 and Under 23 age groups is on on Saturday with the Junior 3 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays both being ncorporated into the meeting. The following weekend the Under 17 and Under 15 Championships are taking place along with the Under 13 Superteams competition.

Press Report week-ending 1st August

The Linwood Sports Complex Open Graded Meeting was last Wednesday (29th) and had a few of our younger members of Clydesdale Harriers taking part. First up was the 100m where Cameron McLeod ran 12.38 and Mark Doris ran 12.41. Mark then ran in the 200m finishing in a time of 24.87. The 800m had Claire Reid running well finishing in 2.43.94 and Roisin McShea ran the 1500m in 5.34.16. Lastly Peter Bowman ran the 1500m in a time of 4.25.85.

Two Harriers made the trek to Ballater to run in the 10 miler last weekend (26th). Bobby Rossborough was fastest out of the two running 66.45 over the undulating course followed a few minutes later by Kath Scott (70.38) who was 2nd veteran prizewinner.

Also that weekend was the Luss Highland Games where Jonathan Farrell was extremely busy competing in a number of events! First up was the 90m which he won followed by 2nd place in the 200m, 4th in the 400m, 2nd in both local and open Long Jump, 2nd in the Triple Jump and 2nd in the local High Jump and 3rd in the open event! Unsurprisingly he won the Jay Scott Trophy awarded every year to the competitor who accumulated most points in track and field events.

Prasad Prasad was as usual busy racing. First was the Aonach Mor Uphill Only Race where he broke the course record. Second was the Lochearnhead Highland Games where he won the 800 yards and the mile then proceeded to win the hill race as well!
