News Report w/e 3rd October

Clydesdale Harriers were competing in several longer distance races recently. The weekend of the 26th September had no less than two full marathons and one half marathon being contested. The half was at Dumfries where Gerry Montgomery ran a personal best time of 1.20.24, followed by Pamela McCrossan (1st veteran) in 1.29.49. Slightly further afield was Kevin Farmer running in the Anglesey Marathon finishing in a time of 3.10.23. Lastly, over in Germany, was the Berlin Marathon where Bobby Rossborough ran a respectable 3.02.18, followed by Kath Scott taking at least 8 minutes off her personal best time to run an excellent 3.16.50.

The previous weekend had John Kennedy running in the River Ayr Way (41 miles) finishing as 1st MSV (male supervet) in a time of 6hr 7m. This race was the last race in the 2010 Ultra Marathon Series and John was awarded the prize of 1st MSV for running excellent times in the D33, Highland Fling, Speyside Way and of course the River Ayr Way, so many congratulations to him.

Parkruns

Roisin had a good run at the Strathclyde Parkrun today - the Pollok Park event was off - and finished first female despite the fact that another is listed ahead of her - the other is a wheelchair user. She was twenty eighth of 134 finishers in a time of 20:33 on what was a new course for her. There were two other Clydesdale Harriers running: Watson Jones was forty first in 22:07 and Christine Duncanson fifty ninth in 24:17.
You can often measure how good a run was by some of the other runners finishing just in front or just behind you - in Roisin's case Keith Redpath who is now a male vet was a very good competitive athlete with a good career both as an amateur and then as a professional was just in front and not far behind was Campbell Joss of Bellahouston Harriers who always runs to a good standard. I also noticed that my old training partner and former Scottish Marathon Champion (2:18:03 in 1979) finished down the field in seventieth place in 27:10. I'm nearly tempted to get the running shoes from the back of the cupboard ......
Well done to all three club members.

Tri, tri and tri again

We have had a lot of triathletes in the club over the past twenty five years or so - Jim Shields was the top man with his GB selections, Michael Diver and Prasad Prasad both had their moments in both triathlons and duathlons too but the main man just now seems to be Cliff Brown. Last weekend he was at the Mid Argyll Sprint Tri. Hwe started off in the fast heat of the swim and was only seven seconds down on the winner and dropped a couple of places on the Bike ride. The run was not a good one unfortunately - he had been working hard on the swimming and cycling parts of the event and the running maybe suffered a bit because of that as well as because of his continuing problem with tight calf and hamstrings. Nevertheless his time of 1:18 overall was better than the winning time the past two years but this year only placed him fourth V50. The tight hamstrings is interesting because it seems to be a West of Scotland problem in that lots of athletes have terrible problems with hamstring injuries and the Royal Scottish Ballet is said to drop more young dancers because of this problem than for any other reason. Runners with any pretence at injury free running should really do proper warm ups for this part of the body and even wear tights for training runs in bad weather.
However his season has been a good one with improvements in swimming and cycling with only the runing being a problem. The cure is - more running! You don't need to be a witch-doctor to work that one out!!! How about the short relays Cliff? Dave will show you the ropes and maybe we'll have a father/son act in the same team yet. Running in training and running in racing are two different things and racing needs to be practiced.
Over the season, Cliff has had two seconds, a third and a fourth in the V50 category and a reasonable showing in the British Half Ironman Champs.

And now a change of subject. In the unfortunate absence of any club team at Kilbarchan last week, Bobby Young and Peter Cartwright ran for a composite Bellahouston Harriers team. Peter was 59th on the third leg in 18:16 and Bobby was 36th in 18:24.

Cyril O'Boyle

One of the most talented as well as one of the most inspirational Harriers in my time in the sport was Cyril O'Boyle. He has been back in Ireland for about 30 years now and I spoke to him on the phone on Friday. Described on several Irish websites and publications as an athletics legend in Ireland and particularly highly respected in Donegal he sounded as good as ever despite giving me ten years in age! Daughter Moirs, Scottish Cross Country and track Champion who represented Ireland in two Commonwealth Games, is still running up to an hour and a half at a time; daughter Pat has seven children and wife Noreen, who was also a very good distance runner, is keeping things in order. It was a great phone call and it's good to know that this man, who was real credit and great representative of the club is still in good form. His best run was when he was sixth in the National Cross Country Championship in 1955. he sends his good wishes to everybody at Clydesdale.
