Some weekend racing
There were a lot of Harriers in action this weekend. The men's track league team was in action on Sunday and suffered from a lack of numbers - there were several call offs on the day - all for perfectly good reasons - but the lack of depth in the club made them serious. As iy was the young element made a great contribution with Peter Bowman, Johnathan Farrell and Ryan Nelson all doing their part with the youngest of all, Conor Ewing - an Under 17 athlete - having a good run in the1500 metres. Ian Robertson also had a good day in the 400 and 800 metres. Earlier on Sunday, at the Balfron 10K where the out-and-back trail is downhill for 5K and uphill for 5K, Donald Cameron was eleventh in 36:56 and Hugh Laverty was fifty seventh of the 490 finishers in 43:18. I had a vested interest in this one - daughter was running in aid of Yorkhill Hospital and it was her forst race since she was thirteen: now a Lady Veteran she was pleased to be timed at 60:34. Liz used to be a coach iwth the club working with the younger ones in Kilbowie Primary School with Julie Govan and Lynn Cowan.

On Saturday Roisin McShea ran in the Deaf.Blind 5K where she was first female passing Stevie Cullen right at the finish.

G.U. Road Race
I went to the Glasgow University Road Race this afternoon - the first race that I had attended this year for several reasons and saw some good running. Paul Carroll won the Clydesdale race-within-a-race when he was nine or ten seconds up on Gerry Montgomery. What a contrast in running styles there and then in came Iain Robertson looking very comfortable followed by Marina, Bobby and Colin and I thought I saw young Bobby Rosborough as well. But it was pointed out to me that Kevin Farmer ran as well - but in a yellow vest. What was that all about? I trained in a multitude of vests but when I raced I always, always wore a club vest. It is possible, in fact usual, for a runner to be ruled ineligible for any award if he/she runs in a vest other than their club vest or an international vest. I once organised an 800 metres race at Meadowbank for the BMC which was won by Paul Forbes. He set a new Scottish native and allcomers record for the distance of 1:46 but the record was disallowed because he wore a pink vest and not his club vest. Sandy MacNeil almost had a go at a famous official who accused him of running for Clydesdale Harriers in a different vest. Were we to be among the prizes, and a runner wearing the wrong vest was a counter, we would not have got the award and two others would have lost out. In a race, always wear the club vest. (It's often a good idea for runners or supporters to have a spare vest in their hip pocket just in case ..........................

Three things
First, Peter Halpin, a UK Athletics Grade Three Coach and a first class athlete a few years ago, is starting coaching sessions at Scotstoun on Saturday mornings from the start of August - just in time to get endurance folk ready for the autumn season of cross country and road running. Donald Macleod will also be available for these sessions. I know from past experience that Donald and I used to get small numbers of committed athletes at these Saturday sessions and the runners learned a lot and the coaches appreciated the chance to work with small numbers.
Second, it was good to see Paul Carroll winning the Sinclair Trophy this week. It is one of the major trophies in the club and has been won by many first class athletes who were outstanding on the Ntional scene and not just within the club. Good to see because it gave Paul two wins in twow years and he now has the incentive to go for three next year. Gerry had a good run to be second after a hard battle. Congratulations also to Pamela for winning the Ladies race - someone should put up a trophy for that one too. On the down side, it might have had a bigger turnout had it not been held in the middle of July which is always a dead month. We used to just not book anything, changing accommodation among them - for the month of July because of the holidays. It was also the only month when committee meetings were not held because of the Fair Holidays: in December we just held the regular meeting in the first week rather than the third week so that business could be conducted. Anyway, congratulations to Paul and Pamela - I think that they should do the first dance at the Presentation together!
Third, How about coming through to Pitreavie this weekend to see Peter Bowman and Johnathan Farrell competing in the Scottish Championships? If it is a good idea to ask them to be stewards at the club Dunky Wright, it is equally good for the cross country guys to go and see them compete.
(In brackets, where are we with the submission for the clubmark?)

Globetrotting Harriers
Ian Stewart once put down Scottish runners with the line "I'll go 200 miles to get into a good race - you'd go 200 miles to get out of a good race!" And it is partly true that top runners avoid each other and with the plethora of races around the country it is easily done these days. However at least the spirit of adventure and good class athletics is alive and well in Clydesdale Harriers. A few weeks ago Johnathan Farrell and Peter Bowman travelled to Manchester with Ian Robertson for the Open Meeting at Stretford. Most recently Johnathan went to Gothenburg in Sweden for a return visit after last year's good experiences. This time he was away for five days and ran in both short sprints. In the 100 metres, running into a -1.5 mps headwind he was third in 11.44 with the winner also outside 11 seconds. Only one from each Heat went through to the Final. In the 200 metres he was again third, this time in 23.05 seconds. It was good competition and great experience and he has come back full of enthusiasm with the Highland Games at Alva next on his comppetition list. Peter Bowman and Tonmy Dolan are both going through as well.
Meanwhile Prasad is off to the Dolomites on the twelfth for a week and will take part in the world sky running championships on the Friday in a place called Canezei. It is said to be a vertical kilometre! It is apparently 1000m climb in only 2.6K of running distance. This is one where they look for the hardest way up the mountain and it is an uphill only race so that will be a totally new challenge for him. Good luck Prasad!

Boulevard Marathons
Some club members have said that they didn't know that the SAAA Marathon had been held on the Boulevard but the truth is that there were actually two run on the same trail. The second was in 1966 and was won by Charlie McAlinden of Babcock's. Also in the field was Hugh Mitchell of Shettleston who had been told that a 2:25 time would get him into the Commonwealth Games team and he set off hard in what was again very warm weather. Like Alder he reached 20 miles before having to drop back out of contention. This was where Charlie McManus came into the picture - but he had not had a drink at all during the race. He was supposed to get a drink from his friend Tony McManus at 20 miles but it was not allowed because 20 miles was not an official feeding station and he had to do without.
At 24 miles - the point where Ian Harris passed Jim Alder - Hugh dropped out. Meanwhile Charlie was being pursued by the 1960 champion, Gordon Eadie of Cambuslang. He made a serious attempt to catch Charlie but he had given him too much and he was also suffering in the heat from the trail and from lack of fluids. Charlie found a wee bit extra at the end and won in 2:26:31.
Two SAAA Championships on the Boulevard, two very hot days and two dramatic finishes!

Good Luck
Since I'm off on holiday from Saturday morning I'd like to wish everybody and anybody competing on the road, on the track or up in the hills this weekend. The County Schools Cross Country Championships were held in the Goldenhill Park this morning and the only result that I have to hand is that Roisin McShea won her race comfortably enough. If any other results are available, I'd like to know! They tend not to be published in the AW. Several of the younger ones are going to the Nigel Barge 3000 metres fun run tomorrow before the Seniors do their bit. So get there a wee bit early Seniors and give the young ones a cheer on their way. We all like to be appreciated. It is good to see Maryhill Harriers putting this race on - it is similar to the efforts by Kirkie Olympians and Garscube Harriers to increase recruitment but doesn't take too many officials to do it. Our best, most recent opportunity to do some recruiting of course was at the Goldenhill Races where PE teachers are all there and it is possible to do some networking, do some recruiting and prepare for the future. It would be a pity if the chance was not grabbed with both hands. For the Seniors tomorrow the race counts towards the Dunbartonshire Cross Country League with the club needing six finishers at least - even if you are not in the first six, you could well be adding to the totals of other clubs. So get out there big style and all the very best.
Next Saturday is one I'll miss but one that I would like to see. It's the Six Stage relays for Men and four stage for women at Livingstone. With two men's teams entered and Mark Eudzinski, former Scottish U20 10000 metres road running champion (in 2000) in the second team it is the most promising outlook for some time. Go on chaps - give it stick (as South African Harrier John Bell Maclachlan used to say).

Paul and Prasad at the Races
Paul Carroll and Gerry Montgomery went to the suspiciously long Lasswade 10 at the weekend. Paul was twenty sixth in 61:02 and Gerry four places back in 62:42. Next races for them are the Tom Scott, a much faster 10, on 11th April and then the London Marathon. Good luck in both of these, boys!
Prasad had another good weekend when he went to the Bishop's Hill Race in Fife. It was back to leading the field home when he won the race by half a minute in 20:12 from anther 66 runners. He reckons that the snow at the op slowed times a lot and this weekend he is off to the Glentress Duathlon in Peebles.
